weeding

As the graphic novel collection is fairly new to most libraries, there has been little discussion on the weeding issues.  The same guidelines used for the rest of the collection can be applied to graphic novels.  Materials are weeded (pulled from the shelves, deleted from the system and discarded) when they are old, out of date, in poor condition or beyond repair, misleading, or have a minimal circulation record.  Items may also be weeded if the issue is shelf space, and the item can be obtained via Inter-Library Loan.  Graphic novels have a tendency to weed themselves out.  Most are published in trade paper and though some are bound or laminated, few are found in hardcover.  Thus, their durability and shelf life is not as long, especially for popular titles.  Fortunately they are also fairly inexpensive and can be replaced when too worn out to continue circulation.
