retrospective sources

As the graphic novels are a fairly new phenomenon, retrospective resources for the genre are limited. Most come in the form of reviews or "the best of" publications. They are ordered in descending chronological order.

The Rise of the Graphic Novel: Faster Than A Speeding Bullet is a history of comics that begins with the Peanuts style comic strip, discusses comic books, superhero comics, the epochal Maus, and the new alternative comics. The book is informative but tends to represent only the bigger and best selling titles.

Comics, Comix & Graphic Novels: A History of Comic Art by Roger Sabin explores the graphic qualities of the comic book, development of the genre into its current art form, and various genres, including the most "recent" authors (since published in 2001).

The 101 Best Graphic Novels , by Stephen Weiner was published in 2003. Weiner defends his choices with personal reviews that don't necessarily reflect everyone's favorites, but do present a wide range of illustrative styles, genres, and a mix of fiction and non-fiction. Weiner also wrote a "quickie guide" to the history of comics.

Graphic Novels: A Bibliographic Guide to Book-Length Comics is an older publication and therefore does not list the newer graphic novels, which have appeared in serious numbers over the past 20 years.
